Learn 5 addition techniques and some examples

Today, we introduced five techniques. They are very helpful and can help you add faster and get the correct answer every time.

1. Count from the number

Start with one of the numbers and continue counting.

For example: 7 + 2

  • Start on 7
  • Count 2 more…until you hit 9
  • So, 7 + 2 = 9

2. Start with the bigger number

When you have to add two numbers, it is always easier to start with a larger number.

For example: 3 + 13

If there are 3 yellow hats and 13 green hats in my suitcase, I will ask you how many hats I wear in total…

Starting with the number 13 and adding 3 is easier than doing it in other directions. 13 + 3 = 16

3. Multiply by 2

Sometimes finding doubles can save a lot of time.

For example: 17 + 19

Find the number 17, 18, 19 between the numbers you want to add

Multiply by 2: 18 x 2 = 36

There, 17 + 19 = 36

If the numbers you need to add are consecutive, multiply the smaller number by 2, and then add another.

For example: 6 + 7

If I take out 6 gray pigeons and 7 purple pigeons from the top hat, how many pigeons do you have in total…

6 and 7 are consecutive numbers, so you can use the following techniques:

Multiply the smaller number by 2, which in this case is 6.

6 x 2 = 12

4. Combine numbers to form a group of 10 people

When you have to add more than two numbers, add these numbers together to get 10 whenever possible.

For example: if you want to know the total number of feathers flying from the hat, you must add

To make it a little easier:

Find the number that is exactly 10: 8 + 2 = 10

Add the rest of the numbers: 10 + 4 = 14

5. Find the 10s group

When one of the numbers you need to increase is close to 10, round it to 10, and then add or subtract any number you use to make it 10.

For example: 7 + 9

Replace 9 with (10–1) and you will get 7 + (10–1)

Add 7 +10 = 17

…Now you only need to subtract 1: 17–1 = 16
